Gas Engineering Apprenticeship

Plumbing alumni Alice Collard stands in front of her van holding her tool kit. If you are a practical person, who enjoys a challenge, problem solving and making a real difference in people’s lives, then a career as a gas engineer could well be the path for you.

You will spend time learning gas theory here with us at Cornwall College covering all aspects from natural gas combustion to gas appliance installation. We build a good understanding of the science and meaning behind gas appliances and how they work and test our understanding by getting hands on in the work shop and of course, you’ll be working with qualified engineers, meeting the required criteria, in the workplace.

To undertake this course no prior knowledge of plumbing or gas is required however it would be an advantage if you have some experience. All subjects will be covered whilst attending the course, however some homework and additional study will be required in your own time. We have built you a strong online moodle page full of information, power points, handouts, work sheets and mock papers to help you revise at your own pace.. Moodle is a great place to pick up required resources on the days that you are not attending college.

With determination and a keen spirit, the hard work will pay off in only 2 years when you will achieve a City & Guilds level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering.

What you will learn

This apprenticeship will help you build all the knowledge required to be a fully-fledged gas engineer. You will be confident in navigating British standards and manufacturer’s instructions. You will learn how and why gas appliances do what they do. In addition to learning about gas appliances you will gain knowledge and experience of pressurised hot water systems. You will understand the health and safety aspects of not just gas itself but the importance of expelling dangerous flue products from a dwelling and the need to provide clean air for combustion.

In addition to your gas studies, we promote and discuss equality, diversity and inclusion, and prepare you for the variety of customers you will encounter. Throughout this course you will be learning and using excellent communication and developing your professional skills. We will use our collective backgrounds to discuss situations we’d never imagine being in, real life jobs that just don’t go to plan, the mistakes we’ve made that we can laugh about now and how to be professional in these situations as we will predominantly be using our domestic qualification in people’s homes

Entry requirements

This is a level 3 qualification and you would need to have a GCSE grade four or equivalent qualification.

Work experience

As an apprentice, work based experience is a must. You and your employer will be given a clear road map of criteria that needs to be met throughout the course as you work alongside an experienced gas operative. You will build an onsite gas portfolio along the way which will show your competency. Of course, we will be here to guide and support you as well as your employer throughout.

Assessment

The majority of the course is learning new skills and retaining the knowledge you have learned. Towards the end of your 2nd year you will have a range of assessments. There are multiple choice papers, an online health and safety exam, a knowledge based exam and practical assessments. Once these are done and your portfolio is complete you have an end point assessment to tie everything together.

Progression

Once you have completed this course you are free to go, however we will be encouraging you back.

This course covers unvented systems and natural gas but after 6 months of holding your qualification the world is your oyster. This course is your foundation into the World of heating systems. You will be able to build up your knowledge and gain further qualifications in LPG and individual gas appliances such as fires and cookers etc. Then there is commercial gas, caravans and boats, all of which Cornwall has an abundance of.

Natural gas is progressing all the time and people are well aware of the impact on the environment. That is why you can take your new knowledge to another level and learn all about renewable technologies like solar panels, ground and air source heat pumps.
